Bay Area home sales lose steam, but prices climb — a little

Bay Area home sales continued to lose steam in Jan but the median price of a single-family property once again rose modestly on a year-over-year basis as buyers competed for a shrinking supply of homes.

The median price of a Bay Area home in Jan was $645,000, up 3.8 percent from Thu Jan 1 1970 That’s a far cry from the double-digit appreciation that was once de rigueur for the nine-county region. Still, discounting a single 30 days — Thu Jan 1 1970, when the median price stayed absolutely flat — Jan was the 58th consecutive four weeks that saw a year-over-year increase in the median price.

This is the nice of story that makes Mark Vandevoorde nervous.
